The Giraffe Manor is one of Nairobi’s most iconic buildings: characterful, picturesque, and enveloped in history like the foliage creeping over its brickwork. Set in 12 acres of private land within 140 acres of indigenous forest in the Langata suburb of Nairobi and with verdant green gardens, sunny terraces and delightful courtyards, it harks back to the 1930s when European visitors first flocked to East Africa to enjoy safaris. The hotel’s 10 rooms include three doubles: Betty, Lynn and Arlene; four double/twins: Daisy, Jock, Marlon and Helen; a twin/double/triple: Kelly; and two suites – the Finch Hatton Suite (double/twin/family) sleeping up to five (2 adults and 3 children), and the Karen Blixen Suite (also sleeping up to 5 – 2 adults and 3 children) which opens directly onto a courtyard and is perfect for families and wheelchair users.
The most fascinating thing about Giraffe Manor is not its beautiful façade or elegant interiors: it’s the herd of resident Rothschild giraffe. These beautiful creatures often visit morning and evening, poking their long necks into the windows in the hope of a treat, before retreating to their forest sanctuary.
Macushla House
Macushla House is a 6 room hotel in the Karen suburb of Nairobi, 20 minutes’ drive from the city centre. The accommodation is spacious with en-suite bathrooms for a maximum of ten guests. Each of the rooms is individually furnished and has high wooden ceilings, rich curtains on the windows and mosquito nets on the four poster beds. The en-suite bathrooms have a shower over the bath. All the main areas of the Macushla House are ornately furnished – bright colours and patterns abound. A heavily African themed lounge with zebra print sofa, make for an interesting place to relax and read or to have a game of chess.
There is another small cozy lounge with a fireplace and a bar. The small restaurant has high backed, wrought iron chairs and serves excellent food. Outside there is a large covered veranda, with wicker, cushioned chairs and sofas in vivid colours, large, comfy seats and benches – it’s a lovely area to sit and enjoy the peace while having tea in the afternoon.
